According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed defenceman Mark Friedman on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the American Hockey League.

Friedman, 27, is in his second full season with the Penguins organization and has split the year between the NHL and the AHL. In 23 games with the Penguins, Friedman has three points (one goal, two assists), 15 penalty minutes and is a plus-two, while in 24 AHL games, the Toronto native has six points, 29 penalty minutes and has an even-rating.

If Friedman clears waivers on Thursday at 2 p.m. ET, he'll be sent to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for their final two games of the regular season. With Pittsburgh close to getting back Marcus Pettersson, they needed to make the move by putting Friedman on waivers.
