The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenseman Ethan Bear and Lane Pederson to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 5th round pick.

Elliotte Friedman reports that Carolina did retain $400,000 in salary on the trade as well.
Carolina acquired Bear during the summer of 2021 in exchange for forward Warren Foegele. Bear, 25, skated in 58 games for the Canes last season, totaling 20 points.
Bear is a quality right-shot defenseman, and the fact that he hasn't played a game for the Hurricanes this season speaks to the team's depth at the position. I would question, however, how Bear was still behind Jalen Chatfield in the pecking order; the latter has zero points and a -1 rating in six games.
Nevertheless, Carolina's GM Don Waddell has openly maintained his position that he will accept nothing less than fair market value for Bear, as the team is no in any cap trouble. Waddell also persists that Bear is a true, bonafide NHL defenseman, but a 5th round pick hardly seems commensurate.

This is the second trade in as many days for the Canucks, who acquired forward Jack Studnicka from Boston last night. Hopefully for them, this makes them a better team.
