The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced on Wednesday evening that they've suspended Washington Capitals defenceman Dmitry Orlov two games for kneeing Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers.

Late in the third period, Ehlers goes to retrieve a puck that was rimmed around the boards by defenceman Dylan DeMelo. When Ehlers gets the puck, he quickly passes it back behind the net, and then get hit by Orlov, who makes contact with his knee. No penalty was called on the play.

"The two players are moving slowly enough, that Orlov has time to recognize that Ehlers is changing position. He responds to this by thrusting his arms and knee outward to try and get a piece of Ehlers." The Department of Player Safety said in their explanation video.

Winnipeg Jets head coach Dave Lowry announced today that Ehlers will miss the remaining three games of the team's road trip.

Orlov will miss tomorrow's game against Boston and Saturday's game against Ottawa. He'll be eligible to return to the Capitals lineup on Monday, January 24th against the Vegas Golden Knights.
