Practice can be grueling for players, so when they get a chance to have some fun with it, coaches tend to give them a little bit of rope. Such is the case regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.

Towards the end of practice, Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell brought a silver trophy, with what appeared to be a little rifle on top, onto the ice at Ford Performance Centre, and placed it at centre ice. After a moment, Campbell ushered the trophy off to the side boards and the team then proceeded to engage in a shootout.

When asked about it following the session, Leafs bench boss Sheldon Keefe had very little knowledge about the trophy or who's idea it was.

"The only thing that I can say about that is goalie coaches & goalies in general do strange things, but you generally give them some rope, because they're so important to the team," said Keefe.

"They were trying to create a little extra competition towards the breakaways and shootouts this season, but I don't know a whole lot about it other than that."

The Leafs have had their fair share of breakaways this season, but not as many conversions as they'd have hoped for. Perhaps a little extra practice in this area and some added incentive (the trophy and the bragging rights) is a good thing.
