At the end of the first round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, fans, analysts, and even management of other teams were left in shock after the Montreal Canadiens announced they were selecting defenceman Logan Mailloux.

The surprise of this pick isn't due to the skill of Mailloux. In fact, based on just skill alone he likely would have gone higher in the first round, as he had an extremely impressive 18 goals and 69 points in 48 games with the London Nationals of the GOJHL in 2019-20. The reason behind the surprise was that Mailloux asked for teams not to select him after he was recently fined for sharing sexual explicit photos of a woman without her consent.

While many were upset, perhaps the most notable of all is Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is a longtime fan of the Habs, but found himself very disappointed by the organization after this selection was made.

«As a life-long Habs fan, I am deeply disappointed by the decision,» Trudeau told a news conference today. «I think it was a lack of judgement by the Canadiens organization. I think they have a lot of explaining to do to Montrealers and fans right across the country.»

To say the least, this pick was extremely shocking and very questionable by the Habs organization. Immediately after the pick, the team released a statement explaining why they made the selection, which angered some even more. This is a move that has certainly damaged the reputation of the Canadiens organization and is something that won't be forgotten about anytime soon.

Meanwhile, St. Hubert has informed the Canadiens that the restaurant may pull out of advertising with the team and at the Bell Centre. Groupe Jean-Coutu and Desjardins Group told the Montreal Gazette they have also contacted the Canadiens to express their displeasure with the team's decision to draft Mailloux. According to the Gazette, a public relations member of the team has stated the Habs are preparing a statement on the issue to release shortly.
