In perhaps what is the clearest sign yet that Phillip Danault will not be returning to the Montreal Canadiens, the 28-year-old pending unrestricted free agent has put his Montreal area home up for sale. That's according to a report by TVA Nouvelles, which adds that a source is saying Danault is not expected to re-sign with the Canadiens.

Danault came to Montreal by way of trade in 2016 in what was one of GM Marc Bergevin's best exchanges so far. He traded forwards Dale Weise and Tomáš Fleischmann at the deadline for Danault, who was a former first-round pick, and a second-rounder that would be used to select defenceman Alexander Romanov. Since that time, Danault has established himself as one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL, and has also put up some good offensive numbers, although he sputtered somewhat this season with five goals and 24 points in 53 games.

Danault is rumoured to have turned down a $5 million offer from Bergevin at the beginning of this past season. TVA Nouvelles believes he wants a six-year deal in the $5.5 million range (AAV). That will be a tough sell in the flat-cap environment but it appears Danault will be testing the market anyway. He has been left exposed in the Seattle expansion draft, but it's doubtful the Kraken would take him without a deal already in place.

The home Danault has listed on the market is in the south end of Montreal. No word on the asking price.
