The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for hopefully another deep playoff run and an NHL insider has revealed just exactly what they plan to do regarding trades.

The Edmonton Oilers are looking to shore up their blue line and possibly add depth at the forward position.

According to Pierre LeBrun of 'The Athletic', despite the recent pickup of defenseman John Klingberg, Oilers GM Stan Bowman may still be looking at adding more defensive help in the approach to the trade deadline.

«We're spending a lot of time with our staff really looking around the league at different teams and players that could be available,» Bowman said. «Depth-wise, I think if we're going to add a defenseman it's probably going to be a lefty. We've got a lot of righties now.

«Our top three lefties have been excellent between Ekholm, Kulak and Nurse. But I think underneath that, if one of them were to get injured, then yeah, we don't have that experienced depth on the left side. So that's one area to look at.»

The group might be searching for a bottom-six winger as well. Depending on whether Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is at center or wing, what the coaching staff decides for his position could influence what type of player they target.

«Whether it's a winger or a center, it's going to be dependent on where we think we want to use Nuge.»

Jason Strudwick of the 'Got Yer' Back' podcast with Ryan Rishaug from 'Sportsnet' believes a bigger-bodied player such as Buffalo Sabres' Jordan Greenway would be beneficial for the Oilers.

The Oilers need extra size

With Edmonton likely to face the physical Vegas Golden Knights in the playoffs, the extra size would come in handy.

There is speculation that Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson would waive his no-trade clause to report to Edmonton. But Bowman might not view goaltending as a position that needs to be addressed in the near future.

All of these questions will have answers within the next three weeks as the trade deadline is on March 7th.
