The NFL has been interesting in changing their onside kick rule for quite some time, and now they are pushing heavily to abolish it all together.

This past off-season, the NFL announced several huge rule changes, with a few of the biggest revolving around the kick-off, something that has become increasingly less important in recent years.

These rule changes involve following the XFL kick-off rules, where players line up on the opposing 40 yard line, and when a player or the ground touches the kick-off, they are then permitted to move, changes that were made in the hopes of reducing injuries.

The other major change revolved around the onside kick, where teams are now forced to reveal when that will happen, taking away the possibility for surprise kicks such as we saw from the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl.

Now, another change could be on the way, with the NFL potentially looking to get rid of the onside kick all together;

The NFL will consider replacing the onside kick with an alternative proposal that has been mentioned in years past. Instead of attempting an onside kick, teams would get one down to convert a 4th-and-20, and if they get 20 yards, then they would maintain possession of the ball.

This has been something suggested for quite some time, with the opportunity to put the ball in the offense's hand rather than rely on a kicker a popular change between some analysts and players, with fans seemingly upset with the idea on social media.

Ultimately, only time will tell whether this would be a good change or not, as it's a solid idea on paper, but we won't truly know until it's seen in action, so expect to see the league push for this change over the summer.
