On July 1st, 2022, Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Seth Jones will become a free agent, but the team wants to change that, and hopefully keep him around long-term. During the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet mentioned that Jones' camp and the Blue Jackets front office have been in talks regarding the possibility of signing an extension as early as this summer.

"The Columbus Blue Jackets have asked him to consider if he would look at doing an extension at some point in this off-season." Johnston said.

"He's had some talks in the last few days with his agent Pat Brisson from CAA Sports, he's taking the weekend now to sort of mull it over and think things through, and I would expect somewhere here in the next few days he'll get back to the Blue Jackets about where he's at and whether he will entertain talks on an extension now."

Jones, 26, has been in Columbus for five and a half years now, and all signs point to him being named captain this offseason. In 56 games this season, the Arlington, Texas native had 28 points (5 G, 23 A), 26 penalty minutes, and was a -18.
