As we now know, the NHL's Department of Player Safety has lined up an in-person hearing with Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson for his questionable hit on Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo.

There have been some really hot takes regarding the hit, with some of the more extreme opinions involve tossing Wilson from the NHL altogether. However, one of the most controversial takes belongs to TSN's Frank Seravalli, who has argued against the hit being illegal.

There were several arguments within the thread that raised more than a few eyebrows, but one interesting detail that could come into play regarding Wilson's upcoming suspension.

Apparently, since Wilson has played 166 NHL games without being suspended, he no longer qualifies as a repeat offender, at least by rule book definition.

In addition, Wilson's hearing isn't even for an illegal check to the head, but rather for boarding, surprisingly. Another interesting detail to note is that, as Seravalli points out, Wilson could become the first player in NHL history to be suspended for boarding on a hit that was not a hit from behind.

Wilson's last suspension came back in September of 2018, when he was issued a 20-game ban for a vicious blindside hit on Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist. The suspension was appealed and ultimately reduced to 14 games.
