Max Akerson is being remembered as a fearless goaltender and a fighter after he passed away Tuesday following years of battling liver cancer

Sticks are being put out in the Minnesota area and beyong this week after a young goaltender passed away. The Chaplin Park teen is being remembered as a fighter.

Akerson, who was well-known in the local high school hockey circuit, was first diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2021.

With surgery and aggressive treatment he had managed to beat the disease into remission at one point, but it came back again. His mother announced his death on social media with a heartbreaking message.

"Today at 10:20 a.m. Max tried to get out of bed and collapsed in his dad's arms. He took his last breath with his parents' hands on him," wrote Sarah Akerson. "He is free from pain and suffering. He fought so long and hard. He did not let cancer win. He lived every day."

Tributes honouring Max Akerson poured in from teams, leagues, and individuals from all over.

While the circumstances were very different, Akerson's death came very close to the tragic passing of St. Louis NHL hopeful Colin Brown, another incident that hit the hockey community hard.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Max Akerson. Many have put a stick or sticks on their front porch in his memory, and have asked others to do the same.

A game will be played in Max Akerson's honour at the Chaplin Ice Forum on Dec 5.
