Edmonton Oilers Analyst Believes the Team Should Pursue Top-10 NHL Scoring Defenseman

This evening Edmonton Oilers analyst Luke Gadzic has suggested that the Oilers need to make a big splash and trade for one of the top offensive defensemen in the NHL.

The Edmonton Oilers have struggled to find the elite level that carried them to the Stanley Cup Finals last season so far in 2024-25.

Throughout the season their struggles have been linked to several different problems including the goaltending, defensive unit, and power play.

While the power play has found recent success the goaltending and defensive play is still a major issue for the Edmonton Oilers as we head into December.

A new suggestion has been made by Edmonton Oilers reporter Luke Gadzic to bring an offensive defenseman to the team that would fix both the power play and defensive issues for the team.

In a new interview former NHLer and current NHL analyst Luke Gadzic was speaking about the Edmonton Oilers' needs heading into the trade deadline.

He decided to make a bold suggestion that the Oilers should approach the Montreal Canadiens and attempt to trade for veteran defenseman Mike Matheson.

The Montreal Canadiens are on the outside of the playoff picture and could be willing to trade a veteran like Mike Matheson with so many young defensemen in the system awaiting their opportunity.

Overall Mike Matheson would be an expensive player to trade for as he is just 30 years old and playing incredibly well this season.

So far in 2024-25 Mike Matheson has 13 points in 20 total games as has been a real bright spot on the Canadiens.

With the NHL trade deadline just a few months away these kinds of reports will continue to ramp up.

Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman will likely want to make a big move at the trade deadline to put his stamp on the team heading into the stretch run of the season.
