It's probably more of a show and publicity ploy aimed at drawing attention from the hockey community and butts in the seats. Fans of both "LetterKenny" and "Shoresy" have taken an interest in it.
Hopefully the 47-year-old does not hurt himself in the game, but it is likely he will not spend a lot of time on the ice as it is likely for show.

In 1995, Ryan was drafted eighth overall by the Montreal Canadiens and went on to play eight NHL games. He put up 36 penalty minutes in those games as he was known for his fists over his skill.
Following the NHL, WHL, and AHL, he moved between leagues. He competed in the ECHL, ACHL, and WCHL before taking a break from the game in 2003–2007. He signed with the Chinook HL, WCSHL, NLSHL, ECSHL, NSHL-Sr., and AESHL as soon as he resumed playing.
