According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, Ilya Kovalchuk will likely not be returning to the Montreal Canadiens.

Although there was some buzz that the team had interest in bringing back the veteran forward, it has pretty much been shut down. The 37-year old had a successful run last season with the Habs, tallying 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) in 22 games with the Canadiens. He also added 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 7 games for the Washington Capitals.

It would be shocking if Kovalchuk returned, especially with the team adding Tyler Toffoli and Josh Anderson during the offseason. He would fit in much better on a team that does not have as much depth up front, and maybe he would sign a contract for the league minimum. Even if the Canadiens were to suffer multiple injuries in their forward depth chart, it would still be a longshot.

The Russia native has had a very successful hockey career in the NHL and KHL. In 926 NHL games, he has scored 876 points (443 goals, 433 assists). In 298 KHL games, he has tallied 327 points (138 goals, 189 assists).
