Ottawa Senators reporter Bruce Garrioch has revealed that the team is pursuing Kraken forward Brandon Tanev at the trade deadline.

The Ottawa Senators have not made the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons.

It is one of the longer playoff droughts across the NHL, but it could be coming to an end this season.

The team is currently in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division, just four points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 27-20-4 record.

Now it is being reported that Senators general manager Steve Staios is prepared to be a buyer at the trade deadline for the first time in many years.

According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen, Staios is interested in adding a winger, specifically naming Kraken veteran Brandon Tanev as someone of interest to the club.

"The belief in league circles is that the Senators have some level of interest in the likes of Chicago Blackhawks winger Ryan Donato and Seattle Kraken winger Brandon Tanev, who are both listed on TSN's Trade Bait board."

Previously, it had been reported that Staios was looking to add another defenseman but perhaps he has changed his mind.

The Kraken have had a disappointing season and currently sit in 6th place in the Pacific Division, with 49 points through 53 games.

As the team is unlikely to make the playoffs, they make perfect sense as trade partners for Ottawa.

Furthermore, Tanev is on an expiring contract and would likely prefer to spend the end of the season on a team with a chance to win.

After all, the 33-year-old is not getting any younger.

Tanev has 8 goals and 15 points in 51 games this season. He is primarily known as a defensive specialist, which makes him a good fit for the Senators' low-event style of hockey.
