As has been stated several times now, the NHL is aiming for the 2020-21 season to start on January 1st. How that will look or whether fans will be allowed in the stands once it does start is anyone's guess. However, according to one report, we at least have a time frame for an annoucement.

"The NHL is still hoping to start next season in January first," said Renaud Levoie of TVA Sports. "League hopes to make an official announcement as soon as possible. It could take another 7 to 10 days. Lots of works to be done until then."

The NHL has stated repeaedly that it would like to have a full 82 game season in 2020-21 but it's doubtful that will be possible. Recent reports state the league will not go below 48 games as anything less than that would be hardly worth it.

“I think the ultimate goal is to end up with fans in the arenas. I don't think we'll get to capacity, but I think we'll have enough socially distanced fans,” an NHL source told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski earlier this week.

Sources also told Wyshynski the league absolutely wants fans in the stands for the playoffs if restrictions will allow for it. We have already begun to see fans start to make their way back into some stadiums, particularly in the NFL, although in limited capacity.
