Unfortunate news for Habs fans this morning. During a game against Russia at the 2020 Karjala Cup, defensive prospect Mattias Norlinder has suffered an injury to his right shoulder. The injury occurred early in the third period, on what looked like a normal play where Norlinder was trying to take the puck away from a Russian player. Sweden would go on to lose the game two to one in a shootout, and currently sit third in the tournament standings with one loss, and an overtime/shootout loss. Sweden will look to bounce back tomorrow when they face their arch-rivals, Finland.

Norlinder, 20, was drafted in the third round, 64th by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2019 NHL entry draft. He is currently playing for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, after spending the last several years within the Modo program at the youth and senior levels.

In 13 games this season with Frolunda, Norlinder has 3 points (1 G, 2 A), 8 penalty minutes, and is a -2. Prior to this season, he played in the second division in Sweden, the HockeyAllsvenskan. In 48 games there he had 24 points (9 G, 15 A), 6 penalty minutes, and was a +22. In 7 playoff games, he recorded 4 points (2 G, 2 A), 2 penalty minutes, and was a +2. Moving from the HockeyAllsvenskan to the Swedish Hockey League will hopefully help Norlinder in the long run, before transitioning to North America within the next couple of years.

Internationally, Norlinder has represented Sweden a couple times during his career so far, most recently at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships. In 7 games, he had no points, no penalty minutes, and was a +2 as Sweden won the bronze medal after defeating Finland by a score of three to two.

Hopefully Norlinder's injury isn't too serious, and that he'll be back on the ice very soon.
