The Pittsburgh Penguins have been a perennial contender for quite some time now. The Penguins have made the postseason every year since the 2006-07 season, and much of that is because of the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. Now, the Penguins' window seems to be closing. Maybe not this season or the next season, but a couple of years down the road, the team could look quite different.

Take the Chicago Blackhawks for example. The superstar core of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Duncan Keith seem to have run out of gas after winning 3 cups in 6 years. Now, Chicago is in rebuild mode, something the Penguins could be dealing with as soon as 2023.

Crosby and Letang would both be 36 years old and Evgeni Malkin would be 37. The Penguins prospect pool is very shallow, and they do not have a lot of draft capital due to trades to acquire veteran players in hopes of winning another cup.

Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang will become free agents in 2022, and if either one of these two left, maybe Crosby would also. It may be very awkward to think about, but seeing Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in a jersey besides the Penguins' yellow and black may not be too far from reality.
