The San Jose Sharks' disappointing season altered the thinking behind longtime fan, Anne Eichhorn, for her annual Halloween display.

Since the Sharks failed to qualify for the postseason, she thought up a brand new theme for her display. 2020 is the 40th anniversary of the USA's victory over the Soviet Union, which has become known as the ‘Miracle on Ice.' Eichhorn decided that she wanted to help celebrate the moment by presenting it on her lawn to commemorate the 1980 Winter Olympics.

She began the process back in August and with quarantine, she had plenty of extra time. Eichhorn watched every movie and documentary that she could find along with listening to Wayne Coffey's “The Boys of Winter.”

The Eichhorn household has not always been known for its Halloween displays, but the hockey theme was brought to life back in 2017 when the display showcased the Sharks versus the Los Angeles Kings. Without playoff hockey to get excited about and with free time due to quarantine, Eichhorn began thinking of a new theme. With 2020 being the 40th anniversary of the U.S. victory over the Soviet Union in the “Miracle on Ice,” the San Jose resident wanted to celebrate by showcasing the memorable moment from the 1980 Winter Olympics.

“It was just kind of a fluke,” she said on Thursday. “We never really decorated. We'd have the occasional pumpkin out with the kids. But a few years ago I was driving through the neighborhood in late August and I saw someone had a skeleton out and I thought it's too early to be thinking about Halloween. Later that day I was in line at the grocery store and was flipping through a magazine and saw this whole display of skeletons and it clicked. I came home, told my husband and he was on board. We're a hockey family, so it made sense.”
