Carolina Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell announced on Tuesday that the team has re-signed defenceman Haydn Fleury to a two-year contract. The deal has an average annual value of $1.3 million.

“Haydn made a huge leap in his development last season and established himself as an everyday NHL defenceman,” said Waddell. “He was very dependable late in the regular season and in the playoffs, and we look forward to him continuing his development into an elite NHL defenceman.”

Fleury, 24, played in 45 games this past season, posting four goals and 14 points along with eight penalty minutes. He also played in eight postseason games, scoring two goals. It has been a somewhat disappointing career to this point for Fleury, who was selected with the seventh overall selection at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He does however appear to be on the right track, as this was his first professional season without time spent in the AHL. While he did only average just 13:40 minutes of ice time per game, he still made some steps in the right direction. The Canes will hope that continues and that he starts to blossom into the player they originally envisioned.
