Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin expressed disappointment in his player after he was suspended 10 games.

Last Saturday, Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman was ejected from the game against the Ottawa Senators after he slammed Tim Stutzle into the ice off of a faceoff.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety responded to the play by suspending Hartman ten games as a repeat offender.

It is certainly a hefty punishment, but one that many are okay with as Hartman has developed a bad reputation. In fact, this is his fifth career suspension.

Today, Wild general manager Bill Guerin commented on the situation, and he did not defend Hartman, nor did he complain about the length of the suspension.

He noted that Hartman needs to do better and cannot cross the line the way he has been in recent years.

"It affects the team. It affects him. This is a big hit for him financially. It's the other player that gets hurt or possibly could have. Ryan is a good player. Not too many guys play his brand of hockey, but he's got to do a better job of not crossing the line. He knows it.

I do worry about him. He's one of my players. He's got to do a better job. He's worked at it. I know he has. We've had a lot of discussions about it."

This is quite revealing coming from a general manager. If your own GM is not defending you, you know you messed up pretty big.

That being said, Hartman is appealing the suspension, the NHL Player's Association announced this evening.

Of course, this move can backfire. The Department of Player Safety reserves to right to lengthen a suspension upon appeal, although it is quite rare.

Typically speaking, suspensions are upheld at their original length after appeal, but there is a chance Hartman could get a game or two knocked off if he is lucky.

Be sure to keep an eye on the DoPS over the coming days as we await their decision. In the meantime, Hartman will continue to sit in the press box for the Wild.
