Beloved Hockey Writer Announces Heartbreaking News: His Life is On the Line
In some unfortunate news coming out of the hockey world today, a beloved hockey writer is dealing with a very serious personal issue that is life-threatening.
Ken Campbell is asking the hockey world to rally around one of its own.
Mike Brophy needs a kidney
Mike Brophy, a legend in the world of hockey writing, is in desperate need of a kidney, and Campbell wants to get the word out in the hopes of finding a donor.
Campbell was introduced to Brophy when the Peterborough Petes made a stop to play the Sudbury Wolves in 1985.
Brophy was the beat writer for the 'Peterborough Examiner', and Campbell remembers being impressed as he heard Brophy talking about the Petes in knowledgeable tones, a team, and an organization he knew well.
Seven years later, they became coworkers at 'The Hockey News' and soon became extremely close friends, often acting like an old married couple.
Now, says Campbell, his "pretend wife" is fighting a serious challenge. Brophy is in desperate need of a kidney, and time is working against him.
Those who know Brophy don't need to be told what a great guy he is, Campbell states. And for those who don't know him, they can take his word for it. Brophy is 67 and otherwise healthy and is tackling this fight head-on.
But he would like to live long enough to watch his grandkids grow up, go off to university, and get married.
