NHL defenceman Trevor Daley has retired from the NHL and will join the Pittsburgh Penguins as a Hockey Operations Advisor, general manager Jim Rutherford announced Monday.

Daley's new role will be based out of Pittsburgh. He will report directly to Rutherford, assisting in player evaluations at both the NHL and AHL level, as well as acting as an ‘eye in the sky' for the coaching staff during games.

“First, I would like to congratulate Trevor on an incredibly successful 16-year career,” said Rutherford. “In addition to being a Stanley Cup Champion with us, he left us with a great impression due to his professional demeanor and quiet leadership qualities. Those traits, along with his desire to want to learn about the business side of the NHL, made him a great candidate to join our staff.”

The 37-year-old made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars during the 2003-04 season. He went on to play 10 more seasons with the Stars before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks prior to the 2015-16 season. He suited up for just 29 games with the Blackhawks before being dealt to the Penguins, who he won back-to-back Stanley Cups with in 2016 and 2017. From there, he played in three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, including the most recent 2019-20 campaign.

Daley was a very underappreciated NHLer throughout his career, not getting much recognition despite being a very consistent top-four defenceman for years. He finishes his career having played in 1058 regular season games, posting 89 goals and 309 points, as well as suiting up for 71 playoff games, where he had six goals and 18 points.
