In some sad news coming from the NFL's Chicago Bears today, their owner Virginia McCaskey has sadly passed away, having lived until the age of 102.

Virginia Halas McCaskey, the longtime matriarch of the Chicago Bears and a direct link to the NFL's origins, died Thursday at 102.

In a statement, the Bears said that «While we are sad, we are comforted knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, full, faith-filled life and is now with the love of her life on earth.»

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that she left a «legacy of class, dignity and humanity» and that the «Bears that her father started meant the world to her.»

Born on Jan. 5, 1923, she was one of two children of Bears founder George Halas. She and her husband, Ed McCaskey, raised 11 children in a modest Des Plaines home.

After the death of her brother, George "Mugs" Halas Jr., in 1979, Virginia was next in line to inherit the team. When her father died on Oct. 31, 1983, she officially took the reins and became one of the most powerful women in sports.

Shortly thereafter, she and Ed made their son Michael team president/CEO. She replaced him with Ted Phillips in 1999, shifting Michael to chairman. When Michael retired in 2010, she made her son George the team's chairman.

Ed died in 2003, exactly two months following their 60th wedding anniversary.

Virginia controlled around 80% of the Bears, placing 13 family members on the board and voting their shares. Her death leaves many questions about the future of the team.

Details remain private, but George said she has repeatedly come up with a plan to make sure the franchise stays in her family, per NFL rules of succession.

A devout Catholic, Virginia would say, as her son Pat also did, that the Bears would stay in the family "until the second coming."

We offer our sincerest condolences to Virginia's family, friends, and anyone who is personally affected by this.
