The Pittsburgh Penguins have fired their assistant general manager Jason Karmanos. Karmanos had been with the team since 2014.

The team will search for a new assistant GM. Until they find one, Sam Ventura, who is the Director of Hockey Research for the team, will be the interim assistant GM. Erik Heasley, who is the manager of hockey operations for the team, will be the GM for the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins, which was also Karmanos' responsibility.

This move comes after a flurry of questionable moves by the Penguins' front office over the course of the offseason including trading Matt Murray, Patric Hornqvist and signing Cody Ceci.

"We would like to thank Jason Karmanos for his contributions to the organization over the past six years. I have been evaluating our hockey operations department and this is the first part of the process to re-organize our group" said GM Jim Rutherford.

Rutherford and Karmanos both came over to the Penguins together in 2014 after working together for decades in the Carolina Hurricanes organization.
