Bruins re-sign RFA defenceman
The Boston Bruins announced today that they have re-signed restricted free agent defenceman Matt Grzelcyk to a four-year contract, worth $14.75 million, and comes with an average annual value of $3.6875 million. The structure of Grzelcyk's contract will see him make $2.25 million in year one, $4 million in year two, and $4.25 million in years three and four.

“It was important for Matt to stay with the Bruins. He grew up a huge fan and loves the organization. I knew that Don Sweeney wanted to get a deal done before arbitration and we worked hard this week to get a deal done,” says Peter Fish, Grzelcyk's agent.
Grzelcyk, 26, was drafted in the third round, 85th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2012 NHL entry draft. In 197 regular season games, he has 54 points (10 G, 44 A), 126 penalty minutes, and is a +45. In 43 career playoff games, Grzelcyk's put up 10 points (4 G, 6 A), 14 penalty minutes, and is a -10.
He had a career year during the 2019-20 season, putting up 21 points (4 G, 17 A), 34 penalty minutes, and was a +15 in 68 games.
Internationally, Grzelcyk has represented the United States on a few occasions, most recently at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships where he was named an alternate captain. He had 6 points (2 G, 4 A), 2 penalty minutes, and was a +1 as the USA finished fifth after losing in the quarter-final against Russia.
With Torey Krug signing with the St. Louis Blues last week, and captain Zdeno Chara mulling over his future, re-signing Matt Grzelcyk was a top priorty for general manger Don Sweeney. As of right now, Grzelcyk could slot in on the first d-pair for the Bruins playing alongside Charlie McAvoy.
