Kings ink 2nd-overall draft pick Quinton Byfield to entry-level contract

Just 10 days after becoming the highest selected Black player in NHL Entry Draft history, 18-year-old Quinton Byfield has officially signed his entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings the team announced on Friday.

Byfield, who will wear #55 for the Kings, was taken 2nd overall on October 6th after registering 82 points in 45 games with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves last season, edging out both Seth Jones and Evander Kane for the honour. Jones and Kane were both selected 4th overall in 2013 and 2009, respectively, and have each gone on to have wonderful hockey careers.

The Newmarket, Ontario native is in the enviable position of being mentored by one of the absolute best two-way centers in this generation of NHL players in Slovenian-born Anze Kopitar.

Listed at 6'4, 215 lbs, Byfield has a similar build to Kopitar (who is listed at 6'3, 225 lbs), and once the youngster packs on an additional 10-15 lbs of muscle, it stands to reason that he can be every bit as dominant as his 33-year-old counterpart.
