The idea of the Buffalo Sabres trading away their franchise player seems somewhat odd, but the team has reportedly at least discussed it recently. According to Adam Herman of Blue Shirt Banter, Buffalo tabled an offer to the New York Rangers.

"I was told earlier today that the Sabres tabled a theoretical offer to the Rangers for Jack Eichel," said Herman on Twitter. "Let's just say it's not something [President John] Davidson and [GM Jeff] Gorton would ever even begin to consider."

"I don't know if it was a formal trade offer so much as, 'here is an idea of what we'd be looking for to engage in this discussion seriously' and then basically offering a deal the Rangers basically had to refuse," Herman added.

It goes without saying that if the Sabres are going to part with Eichel, they will be looking for a huge return. The 23-year-old former 2nd overall pick has 354 NHL games under his belt and has 137 goals and 337 points. That's also while playing on a not-very-good team.

One has to wonder if the Sabres attempted to get the Rangers to give up their first overall pick in the 2020 draft in order to land Eichel. If that is the case, it's not a surprise at all that New York quickly rejected to offer. That said, if the team could somehow swing a deal to add Eichel without giving up that pick and without trading away any members of the team's core, you have to think the Rangers would quickly become a force to be reckoned with.
