"Don Meehan, Lundqvist's agent was on Hockey Central with Jeff Marek and the group this week and he said he's definitely taking time to think about his future. I think one of the teams that's considering it and interested is Washington." Friedman said.
Lundqvist, 38, was bought out by the New York Rangers this past Wednesday after spending 15 years with them. He was drafted in the seventh round, 205th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2000 NHL entry draft. He spent five years playing in Sweden before coming over to North America for the 2005-06 season, and the rest is history.
In 889 regular season games, he has a record of 459 wins, 312 losses, 96 overtime/shootout losses, a 2.44 GAA, a .918 save percentage and 64 shutouts. In 130 playoff games, Lundqvist has put up, 61 wins, 67 losses, a 2.30 GAA, a .921 save percentage and 10 shutouts.
Lundqvist is the Rangers' all time leader among goaltenders in games played (889), wins (459), and shutouts (64). He also won the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender in the NHL during the 2011-12 season.
Internationally, Lundqvist has represented Sweden on many occasions, most recently at the 2019 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championships. Lundqvist has had a very successful international career, winning a World Championship gold once, World Championship silver twice, World U-18 Championship bronze, Olympic gold once, and Olympic silver once.
Washington could definitely be a good landing spot for Henrik Lundqvist. With Braden Holtby set to hit free agency on Friday, Lundqvist could come in to solidify the backup role, and help mentor young goaltender Ilya Samsonov who will more than likely take over the reigns as the starter next season.
