The San Jose Sharks are looking to find a partner in net for Martin Jones. They are currently exploring all possible options either through free agency or trades, general manager Doug Wilson said on Friday.

With the free agent signing period coming up on October 9, this could happen sooner rather than later.

“Ideally, and it depends on the acquisition cost, is getting a guy that's been a No. 1 that is a veteran and wants to come in and compete for a spot," Wilson said. "There's a lot of guys out there, whether it be potential UFA, trade potential. We've explored all of those, doing a lot of background work as to who would fit and complement our group."

Martin Jones still has four seasons left on his six-year contract, and Aaron Dell is not expected to return to the team. Jones went 17-21-2 with a 3.00 GAA and .896 SV% in 41 games.

There are plenty of options in the goaltending market this offseason, as many teams will be looking to upgrade at the position. Robin Lehner, Braden Holtby, Jacob Markstrom, Corey Crawford, Anton Khudobin, and Henrik Lundqvist are just some of the names on the market. Along with free agency, Matt Murray and Devan Dubnyk are two names that have been exposed to trade rumors lately.

Doug Wilson said he has assigned goalie coach Evgeni Nabokov the task of finding the right fit in net for the team. Wilson wouldn't say if he was looking to replace Jones as the starting goalie or just for someone to share time with him.

Although a trade is possible, WIlson does not want to trade either of the team's first two picks (31, 34) in the NHL draft for a goalie. Wilson has the reputation to pull the trigger on free agents and trades in the past, and if there is a GM to turn the Sharks around, Wilson is the right guy for the job.
