The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the re-signing of 25-year-old goaltender Tristan Jarry to a 3-year contract extension on Saturday, essentially indicating that the Pens have made their internal decision on who their goalie of the future will be.

Jarry is set to earn $3.5M AAV through the 2022-23 season, a steep increase from the $630,833 he earned last season with the Pens, a career year for the Surrey, BC native.

"Tristan is coming off of an All-Star season and has demonstrated the ability to be a regular starter for us," said Penguins GM Jim Rutherford. "He is a fundamentally sound young goaltender who we believe is a great asset for the Penguins."

Given the commitment that Rutherford has made to his 2019-20 backup, whose numbers indicate that he is ready for a long look as the team's defacto number one, the writing seems to be on the wall for two-time Stanley Cup winner and Thunder Bay, ON native Matt Murray.

Murray has been the target of much trade speculation since Rutherford declared his intent to move a goalie during this offseason. Due to his injury troubles over the past few seasons, Murray's numbers have taken a sizable hit since winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2015-16 and 2016-17 with the Pens.

Jarry, on the other hand, posted career-best numbers in both starts and wins (33 starts, 20 wins), and also reached new highs in GAA (2.43) and Save % (.921) last season. He also set the Penguins franchise shutout record in 2019-20. Jarry went an incredible 177:15 minutes without allowing a goal between November 29th through December 10th.

Jarry was drafted by the Pens in the second round (44th overall) in 2013.
