Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill is going to do the best he can in trying to re-sign pending unrestricted free agent goaltender Anton Khudobin.

Nill reached out to Khudobin's agent, Kent Hughes, on Thursday and made it clear that the team would love to re-sign the 34-year-old netminder. Khudobin reportedly would like to make something work out as well.

“We plan to speak to Jim and will try to make it happen,” Hughes told The Athletic on Friday.

Khudobin is likely in for a raise from his current $2.5 million salary after his recent play, which included leading the Stars all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. It wasn't a fluke by any means either, as he has been one of the league's best backup goaltenders over the past few seasons. The 2019-20 season was his best to date, posting a 2.22 goals against average along with a .930 save percentage.

The only question about bringing Khudobin back into the fold is what happens with Ben Bishop. Bishop, who has been the Stars' starting goaltender for the last three seasons, missed the majority of the 2020 playoffs due to injury. When healthy, he is one of the best in the game, however injuries have been a major problem for him his entire career. If the Stars were to try and move him, teams would certainly line up as he has a very team friendly deal at $4.917 million for three more seasons.
