Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal is in the final year of a massive ten-year contract he signed with the team a decade ago and is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

But the team wants Staal to remain in Carolina and it's expected that the 34-year-old will sign a new contract with the team, rather than hitting the market on Canada Day, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
"Not sure the timeline, but no one is expecting Jordan Staal to leave Carolina." Friedman said during his 32 Thoughts article on Wednesday.

The Thunder Bay (Ontario) native is in his 11th year with the Hurricanes and his fourth as full-time captain (shared the role in '17-18 with Justin Faulk). In 32 games this season, the 2006 second overall pick has 13 points (nine goals, four assists), ten penalty minutes and is a plus-five.
