Retired NHL defenseman Scott Hannan made an astute observation on Sunday night when Sharks defender Radim Simek was ruled out for the remainder of the San Jose - Minnesota game following a clear headshot from Mason Shaw.

The play happened on Simek's first shift of the game, but it wasn't until five minutes into the second period that the play was recalled. The referees obviously missed it - they're human, it happens.
A head injury is the obvious concern, but - as is standard - Sharks head coach didn't offer much of an update. His response to the hit in post-game:
"It was a tough play. I'll let the league decide on that. Right now, we're not sure yet (about his availability for Tuesday). We'll know a lot more tomorrow morning."

The NHL's Department of Player Safety will undoubtedly review this play, and Mason Shaw more than likely faces some type of supplemental discipline. Although, crazier things have happened, and you never truly know what DoPS will do.
