The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today they have agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.25 million contract extension with pending RFA Pierre Engvall:

Engvall, 26, has scored 62 points in 168 career NHL games & 56 points in 94 AHL games. The lanky Swede earned himself a decent raise, although only on a one-year 'prove-it' deal. In relatively sheltered minutes, his play-driving numbers are considerably strong & he may have earned a promotion along with his raise:

Engvall's new contract places the Maple Leafs $1.49 million above the salary cap & Rasmus Sandin still needs a deal. Could we see Alex Kerfoot & William Nylander traded before the start of the 2022-23 season? It would certainly make sense, as they make $3.5M & $6.9M respectively. Kerfoot possesses a 10-team no-trade clause & Toronto is much deeper at wing than at center, so Nylander, with his much larger cap hit, makes a little more sense to be traded. Although he is definitely the better player, so who knows if GM Kyle Dubas actually wants to move him.

With New Jersey's acquisition of John Marino & Simon Nemec being selected 2nd Overall, could there could be a trade-fit between the Devils & the Maple Leafs? It is possible we could see Nylander switching places with D Damon Severson. I don't have a crystal ball or anything, but something has to give if Toronto wishes to be cap-compliant by October.
