After winning the Super Bowl earlier this month, the general consensus was that Los Angeles Rams tackle Andrew Whitworth would soon announce his retirement.

It was a reasonable thing to assume given that Whitworth, 40, had never won a Super Bowl prior and would be able to go out a champion. From the sounds of things, he himself was planning on retirement, but hockey icon Wayne Gretzky may have convinced him otherwise.

«I'll never forget after the game, the Great One Wayne Gretzky called me because I live out near him in Sherwood,» Whitford said on NFL Total Access. «He was like : hey Whit, there's only one thing better than winning one, and that's winning two. And I said : you know what? I can't argue with you. It's going to be tough, one way or another it's going to be a tough decision and it would be a lot of great guys I'm missing out on that's for sure.»

If there is someone who can speak to winning multiple championships, Gretzky is one of the ones to do it. Not only is he highly regarded as the best NHL player of all time, but he was able to win four Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers during their dynasty in the 1980's.
