It was an upset, to be sure, and one that is not sitting well with Russia. Finland has won its first ever gold medal in men's Olympic hockey after defeating ROC 2-1. The political history between Finland and Russia/the former USSR is not a good one. In fact, Finland's mandatory military service was instituted partially because of constant threats from the former USSR. Bitterness and tension remains between the two countries, and that was on full display as the Finns were receiving their medals.

According to Slava Malamud, a reporter covering European hockey who was born in the former USSR, the Russian commentator for the broadcast in that country took a shot at the Finns as they were being handed the gold, essentially calling them rats.

"The Russian TV announcer at the end of the game: 'The Finns are grabbing gold medals with their little rats' paws.' In case anyone out there is wondering what it's like when a country loses its goddamn mind." - Slava Malamud

There is no doubt that anything less than gold for the ROC at the Olympics is a failure. And to lose to Finland in the final seems to be especially embarrassing for the team. Anton Slepyshev, one of the ROC's best player, released a particularly bitter statement on his Instagram account following tons of criticism from the media in his home country.

I want to say a real THANK YOU to those who believed in us for real!!! It was a TEAM! and we did the best we could! Thank you all for the silver! We won it!!! All the shitheads, haters, evaluators, ALL those who criticized us the whole tournament and waited, even before the final, for our misfire, most of the Russian media, this is your bread! Chew!!!! Don't choke on it!!!!!! - Anton Slepyshev
