The NHL announced the "Fountain Face-off" just over a week ago, a skills competition that would take place at the famous Bellagio Hotel's Fountains in Las Vegas. The idea entailed eight All-Star players in the center of the fountain trying to shoot pucks as fast as possible to knock down five targets placed around the fountain pool. This was a new and unique idea for the NHL's All-Star weekend, and one that a fan found out the hard way wasn't aired live.

Following the event airing on television Friday night, the NHL's Twitter account posted some video from it. It came with a reply from a fan who said he waited at the fountains for two hours in the cold before realizing the event had been pre-recorded.

In hindsight, the move makes some sense. However, fans are used to events at the All-Star weekend taking place in real time, although I'm sure there's a slight tape delay in order to get rid of things the league would rather not be heard on live TV. It's a little odd that the NHL wouldn't try to have fans around the area cheering on the participants at the time, though. It would have made for a more exciting segment. Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets was the winner of the competition.
