Just over five hours until puck drop, the National Hockey League announced that they are postponing tonight's game between the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings that was set to be played at the Honda Center.

In a statement, the NHL said, "The National Hockey League announced today that due to COVID-related issues affecting the Anaheim Ducks, tonight's game versus the Detroit Red Wings has been postponed. The game has been rescheduled for Sunday, Jan. 9."

The news of the postponement comes only a few hours after Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson was pulled from the ice due to a positive COVID-19 test result. Head coach Dallas Eakins said after the practice that Anthony Stolarz was already penciled in to start tonight's game. But now those plans are thrown out the window.

The reason why the National Hockey League likely already announced a rescheduled date for the game is because the Detroit Red Wings are not coming out to California or the Western United States for the rest of the season. They're set to be in Los Angeles on Sunday and then in San Jose on Tuesday, followed by a trip up to Winnipeg next Thursday. The only logical option was to have the teams face off on Sunday, although the game time is still TBD.
