The Vancouver Canucks were at the wrong end of a 7-1 blowout loss to Mikko Rantanen and the Colorado Avalanche. While it was a positive game for Colorado, who are looking to turn around their season after a poor start, it might be overshadowed by a dirty incident in the third period.

About half-way through the third period, Avalanche forward Kiefer Sherwood checks Canucks defenceman Tucker Poolman along the boards. Poolman then reacts to the hit by turning his body and swinging his stick, making contact with Sherwood's head.

Sherwood would fall to the ice, but remained in the game. Poolman received a game misconduct, as well as a match penalty on the play. A match penalty given to Poolman means that the play will be automatically reviewed by the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety.

It has been announced that Poolman will have a hearing with the the NHL's Department of PLayer Safety on Friday, and any supplemental discipline will likely be announced in the late-afternoon/early-evening. The Dubuque, Iowa native has never been suspended during his four-year NHL career.
