Vegas closing in on multi-year extension with defenceman Alec Martinez

The Vegas Golden Knights are reportedly close to locking up Alec Martinez to a multi-year contract. According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, Alec Martinez will stay in Vegas and will sign a three-year contract worth $5 million or a little more per season.

But as Jesse Granger of The Athletic points out, it could be another interesting off-season for the Golden Knights given their current cap space. Granger added that before the Martinez signing becomes official, Vegas only has about $4.1 million in cap space, meaning that they'll be above the $81.5 million ceiling once Martinez puts pen to paper. In order to become cap compliant by the beginning of the 2021-22 season, Vegas will have to find a way to shed salary via a trade for example.

Martinez, 34, had a strong first full season in Vegas. In 53 regular season games, he tallied 32 points (9 G, 23 A), 12 penalty minutes, and was a +26. In 19 playoff games, Martinez recorded 6 points (4 G, 2 A) and nine penalty minutes, helping Vegas make it to the third round of the playoffs where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens.

The Golden Knights are currently sitting at roughly $4.1 million in cap space, so they'd already be over the ceiling with this signing alone.
