With time ticking down until the opening of free agent frenzy on July 28th, there is still no deal in place between Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog and the team. Quite the opposite, actually. Rumours have surfaced that the two sides are not close and that Landeskog has declined at least 3 offers from GM Joe Sakic.

It was reported by St. Louis Blues rinkside reporter Andy Strickland on Thursday that the Avs have extended 4, 5 and 8-year deals to Landeskog's camp, with the 8-year deal coming in at just above the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins deal ($5.125M), with the 4 and 5-year deals being North of that number.

During the most recent 31 Thoughts Podcast with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek, Friedman suggested that a good contract comparable is that of New York Islanders captain Anders Lee. Lee signed a 7-year, $7M AAV deal ($49M total) back on January 1st, 2019.

Landeskog, 28, has the luxury of playing alongside one of the absolute best players in hockey in superstar forward Nathan MacKinnon, and winger Mikko Rantanen is not far behind. A borderline elite winger in his own right, Rantanen has no doubt helped Landeskog to inflate his scoring totals over the past few seasons, with a career-high 75 point season coming back in 2018-19. Landeskog played just 73 games that season.

While 7x$7M seems like a fair deal on the surface, it is worth noting that Landeskog plays a bit of a harder game and has had some issues in the health department throughout his career.

Still, if the Avs don't pony up - and soon, they could be watching their captain and top line LW walk out the door as a free agent in less than two weeks time.
