The NHL has levied a fine against the Dallas Stars for their decision to hold an optional practice on Dec. 26, which is a holiday for players according to their CBA.

It took a few days, but the NHL has finally announced its decision after investigating the Dallas Stars for a potential breach of the collective bargaining agreement between the league and players.

The decision to hold an optional practice on Dec 26, which is deemed a holiday in the CBA, has cost the team $100,000 by way of a fine.

"The National Hockey League announced today that it has fined the Dallas Stars' organization $100,000 for the team's practice on Dec. 26, 2024. This team activity was in violation of Article 16.5(b) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association.

The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation."

Article 16.5(b) of the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement is pretty clear on what is considered a holiday over the Christmas Break and what isn't allowed to take place.

"December 24, Christmas Day, and December 26 shall be off-days for all purposes, including travel, and no Club may request a Player's consent to practise on such days for any reason."

In December of 2022, the Toronto Maple Leafs were fined $100k for breaching the same clause in the CBA by having the team travel on the day after Christmas.

The Dallas Stars have not stated who was responsible for making the decision and whether it was a simply oversight or a blatant attempt to break the collective bargaining agreement's rules.
