Marc Crawford, who coached several teams in the NHL over the years, has resigned from his current coaching position citing the need to work on himself

He has coached more than 1100 games in the NHL, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996.

Despite his impressive resume, Marc Crawford has announced he is stepping down as head coach of the ZSC Lions in Switzerland, and has taken some time to explain why.

In a statement on the official website of the ZSC Lions, Crawford said he has been in intensive therapy for his mental health, and it made him realize he needs to step away.

"This process has proven to be both challenging and revealing to me as a coach, a husband, a father, and an expecting grandfather and finally as a person."

Crawford added he simply isn't able to give the team what it deserves from him at this time.

"I have always expected that the players of ZSC give 100% effort to the team, and I now realize that because I am not able to give the same commitment, effort, and focus, I must step away and allow this talented group to move forward with someone who can give the effort this team deserves."

A former NHL player, Crawford began his NHL coaching career with the Quebec Nordiques in 1994, following to team to Colorado after their relocation in 1995.

Crawford and the Avs parted ways in 1998, and he began coaching with the Vancouver Canucks, a position he held for six seasons before moving on to the LA Kings, Dallas Stars, and finally a brief stint with the Ottawa Senators in the 2018-19 season. Crawford joined the ZSC Lions in 2022 after being let go from his assistant coaching position by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Crawford's NHL coaching style was a controversial one, with former NHLer Brent Sopel telling several stories in 2019 about his time under Crawford in Vancouver.
