Kappo Kakko has been heavily involved in trade rumors in recent weeks as the Rangers seaosn continues to fall apart.
He is not the only Rangers forward that was on the trade block, but he has become the first to actually get moved this season.
Just moments ago, the team announced that they had moved him to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for defenseman Will Borgen and two draft picks.
The full details of the trade are as follows:
The Rangers receive defenseman Will Borgen and a 2025 3rd round draft pick and a 2025 6th round draft pick.
The Kraken receive forward Kaapo Kakko.
Understandably, Rangers fans are not too thrilled about this deal.
Trading a 2nd overall pick is always a risky move, but getting so little in return feels extremely bad for the Rangers and their fans.
Kakko has 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points through 30 games with the Rangers this season.
That put him on pace to roughly match his career-best season which came in 2022-23 where he potted 18 goals and 22 helpers for 40 points over a full 82-games.
Obviously, for a second overall pick, even those numbers are disappointing, but the Rangers haven't exactly put the 23-year-old in a position to succeed.
This season he is averaging just over 13 minutes of ice time, which is not enough to really start racking up the points.
In fact, his scoring pace is pretty good considering his limited ice time.
One would have to imagine he will get a bigger opportunity on the Kraken, and many fans won't be surprised to see his scoring increase proportionally.
Be sure to tune in to more Kraken games this season to see how bad this deal ends up looking for New York.
Similarly, be sure to keep an eye on the Rangers to see which player could be on their way out next.
