Former Detroit Red Wings Prospect Hit With Multi-Game Suspension for Threat to Female Referee
Dick Axelsson, a former draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings, has been hit with a fine and a multi-game suspension after making threats aimed at a female official.
This might be a first from the world of professional hockey. At the very least, it's quite rare.
Dick Axelsson, a 37-year-old star of Sweden's 2nd-tier hockey league HockeyAllsvenskan has a received a fine and a multi-game suspension after threatening a female referee twice during a game.
Dick Axelsson received three games from the league's disciplinary committee, as well as a fine totalling around $600 USD.
According to referee Anna Hammar, who filed a report with the league following the incident, Axelsson told her twice while she was trying to get him into the penalty box that if she laid her hands on him again, she will "know what happens."
As he jumps over the side, I turn my back to him and go a bit ahead, whereupon he says: 'Put your hands on me again and you know what happens.' I turn around and ask, 'What did you say?' and he repeats, 'You know what happens if you put your hands on me again."

Axelsson was taken in the second round by the Detroit Red Wings in 2006. Other than a 17 game stint in the AHL with the Grand Rapid Griffins, he has spent his entire playing career in his home country of Sweden.
Djurgardens IF, the team Axelsson has played for in the past several seasons, was relegated to Sweden's 2nd-tier league last year after losing a series where the winner got to stay in the SHL.
