Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby left the game early tonight after he collided awkwardly with teammate Evgeni Malkin.

Sidney Crosby left tonight's game against the LA Kings late in the first period.

Apparently, the Penguins captain collided with his long-time teammate Evgeni Malkin during a lapse in communication.

This is just the latest in a serious of tough blows for the team.

It is clear that the Penguins are no longer a threat to make the playoffs and it feels like we are watching one of the all-time greats waste the end of his career playing with such a mediocre club.

That being said, if the Penguins were to make any kind of push this year, it would be because of Crosby.

Even at the age of 37, Crosby leads the team in scoring with 30 points in 31 games.

Stay tuned for updates on this story as we await word from the team on his status.

Update

Crosby returned to the Penguins bench for the start of the second period, and has since taken to the ice.

It appears as though it was just a minor issue that needed to be resolved.

Since he left the game with just 3:17 left in the first period, he wouldn't have really missed much ice time if any as well.

Luckily whatever the issue was seems to be nothing for Penguins fans to worry about.

Still though, be sure to stay tuned to see how the rest of Crosby's season plays out.

After all, this could be his final year in Pittsburgh should he change his mind to try and chase one last Stanley Cup.
