Two years into retirement following a career-ending injury, former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser is suing HCC Life Insurance company for not providing adequate disability payments.

Danny DeKeyser was a major player in the Red Wings lineup for ages. Starting small with 11 games in his first season from 2012-13, he was a key defenseman for Detroit for a decade, garnering 146 points in 547 games played. Unfortunately, in 2022, his physical ailments were too much for the team to manage, resulting in his placement on injured reserve.
"UPDATE: The Detroit #RedWings today removed forward Jakub Vrana from injured reserve.

Additionally, defenseman Danny DeKeyser has been placed on injured reserve."
Months later, DeKeyeser felt he had recovered enough and hoped for a chance to get back into the game. He was granted a professional tryout from the Vancouver Canucks, but was ultimately released after it became obvious his medical conditions would not go away while playing.
"The Vancouver Canucks have released defenceman Danny DeKeyser from his professional tryout."
Now, the former Detroit defenseman is looking to get back what he missed out on due to his NHL career getting cut short. DeKeyser is now suing HCC Life Insurance for close to $700k in disability payments. The 34-year-old retiree's lawsuit alleges that the company has breached terms by not providing the required funds the plaintiff is owed for losing his job because of medical issues.
"The purpose of this case is to compel Defendant HCC Life Insurance Company to provide certain long-term disability benefits in the amounts and at the coverage levels promised, as well as for an accounting, and an award of attorney fees and costs incurred as a consequence of Defendant's failure to do so."
Though it is not the life he had likely hoped nor imagined for himself at 34, Danny DeKeyser is currently an associate agent with Saros Real Estate, hopefully not too much in the Red in his life after hockey. If all goes well, he will be able to get much of that lost income back.
