Reports indicate tough guy Ryan Reaves may have a hard time drawing into the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup under new head coach Craig Berube

The Toronto Maple Leafs are now hyper-focused on results, and trying to ensure the long list of early exits from the Stanley Cup playoffs can finally be put to an end. As such, there are many who believe tough guy Ryan Reaves will have a very hard time drawing into the Leafs lineup under new head coach Craig Berube.

Berube may even have a soft spot for Reaves, as he plays the type of game that Berube himself played during his days as a player in the NHL. However, Editor In Leaf believes the veteran will likely find himself in a similar situation as Wayne Simmonds in the 2024-25 season.

"Reaves' situation seems destined to follow that of Wayne Simmonds. He likely plays in a handful of games (25-35) and spends most of his time as a healthy scratch or sent to the Toronto Marlies if salary cap space is needed."

Reaves suited up for 49 games during the regular season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2023-24. He also got another five games in the post season, something many fans weren't happy about. Editor in Leaf's report states there are better, younger players who should be getting ice-time over Reaves, and that is likely to happen under Berube.

"The Leafs would be better served with [Easton] Cowan, [Fraser] Minten, or a deserving Marlie such as Alex Steeves playing over Reaves."

As the game continues to get faster, and more skilled, many players like Reaves are going to find themselves on the sidelines more often than not. Whether you're a fan of the guy of not, Reaves adds very little to a lineup other than the ability to throw hands should the need arise. 2024-25 marks the final season of Reaves' current contract, which carries a cap hit of $1.35 million. The 36-year-old may have a very difficult time finding another NHL contract when this one expires.
