The Pittsburgh Penguins have often boasted about one of the most loyal fanbases in the entire NHL, but that notion can be put to rest after a recent photo of their arena surfaced.

Penguins play in front of empty house after recent trade deadline moves

When the Pittsburgh Penguins welcomed in the San Jose Sharks, they expected less fans than usual given their place in the standings, but the ultimate result wasn't something that anyone expected.

After trading Jake Guentzel and seemingly admitting that they have no chance to compete in 2023-24, the fans have turned their back on the team, despite still having stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson on the ice.

Seeing a dip in attendance wasn't unexpected, but the amount of empty seats in the arena has to be disappointing for the Penguins front office, especially given the three Stanley Cups that this unit has brought to the organization and to the city.

Now, they look towards the summer where they need to make some big decisions about the future of this team, and while it's going to get better before it gets worse, they will be hoping that their fans can once again get behind this team, no matter who is on the ice.
